Signals. Fragments. Contact.
Ryan McDavid is a Guyanese indie artist making songs that live in the spaces between indie rock, darkwave, dream pop, and shoegaze. His music is sad, strange, and honest, built from late night feelings and the kind of thoughts that keep you awake at 2 a.m.
For years, he was the “band guy,” playing bass and guitar in local projects like Behold the Jury. He loves the energy of a room full of musicians, but his solo work became the anchor, a way to keep a consistent vision while everything else shifts.
McDavid’s catalog is cinematic but human. Tracks like Runaway (Late Night Reverb) slow down time, turning nostalgia and insomnia into sound. He’s collaborates with fellow Guyanese artist Ben Franklyn, crossed worlds with bodybuilder Rosanna Fung on Never Seen You Like This, and played music abroad, playing open mics across California and Florida while couch surfing and chasing the dream in cities like Long Beach, San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Orlando, and Miami. Much of this work has been shaped alongside engineer Ray Nizam, whose intuitive approach to production helps bring McDavid’s vision to life.
His work has been recognized in outlets like Darkwave Daily, IndiePulse, Lost in the Manor, Sinusoidal, and Illustrate Magazine. Influences range from Joy Division and The Ramones to Radiohead, The Killers, Mareux, Artemas, and the atmosphere of Kavinsky’s “Nightcall.” More than genre, what ties his songs together is honesty, he doesn’t release anything unless he’s personally addicted to it.
The greatest lesson he’s learned is persistence. “You fail constantly, but you have to keep showing up,” he reflects. “Trying to make it as an independent artist is isolating, but you have to be okay with that silence while you’re building your vision.”
Looking ahead, McDavid is developing new tracks across multiple sonic directions. He isn’t rushing, each release must carry the same honesty and cinematic resonance as Runaway. His goal is simple but ambitious, to craft music that helps listeners feel less alone.
